OMG New Tau!

The new Tau have finally been announced!

Just reading the battle reports in this month’s White Dwarf, we see some rather butt-kicking toys that our fellow Fire-caste can expect to play with:

  • Flyers with turret-mounted weapons – never worry about firing-arcs again!
  • Better standard equipment! Fire warriors now come equipped with photon grenades!
  • SUPPORTING FIRE! (Nearby units can fire overwatch, not just the assaulted unit!)
  • TOYS! Counter-fire system that increases overwatch Ballistic Skill to 2? Riptide??

I cannot wait to get my hands on some of these.

I am also really happy that Games Workshop is selling entire armies based on their battle reports too, seems like a great way for new players to get into the game.

Check it all out at Games Workshop.

Storm of Vengeance Tournament

There is a 750-point tournament at my local Games Workshop in Chatswood next month! Storm of Vengeance:

I’ve been aching to get my Ultramarines into some of this action, but I’ve decided to try something a bit more say, heavy.

Here’s my in-progress list:

Imperial Guard Tank Squadron

Company Command Squad 50

Veteran Squad (2x plasma guns) 100
Veteran Squad (2x melta guns) 90

Leman Russ Battle Tank (heavy flamer, heavy stubber, dozer blade) 170
Leman Russ Battle Tank (heavy flamer, heavy stubber, dozer blade) 170
Leman Russ Battle Tank (heavy flamer, heavy stubber, dozer blade) 170

TOTAL: 750 points

My scout Sergeant Telion.

The model is the metal version, based using the Warhammer 40k basing kit, that includes the Eldar guardian’s head, and some sand and slate.

I’m happy with the way the beard has turned out. The beard was base-coated in black, then layered with grey, washed with brown and highlighted in white.

New Tau images leaked

Fellow Fire Warriors! Some trawling of the internet has yielded some rather exciting new Tau images.
My personal fave is the Riptide supersized battlesuit. Also notice the new-look Broadside model and plastic Pathfinder teams.

Tau tactics in 6th edition

So, 6th edition has been out for a while, I think I’m long overdue for some theory on how the Tau battleplan might be affected.

My last tournament with Tau was at the Tasmanian State Championships, and I did pretty average – mainly because I was really new to competitive play I guess!

New Assault Range

The most important tactics while playing Tau is to negate enemy assault and melee troops, so the change to the charge rules is pretty significant. With 2D6 for rolling charge range, most enemy infantry can potentially charge 12 inches, though the average would be about 7.

Now, when enemies declare a charge attempt, our gun-lines and battlesuits can fire Snap Shots in a last-ditch shooting attack. It’s definitely a bonus for the Tau army, even though we must roll sixes to score any hits. Good news is, we can fire even before the range is calculated – so a failed enemy charge is a free volley from the Tau.

Precision Shots

All Independant Characters and Sergeants gain Precision Shots, so now all our Battlesuits’ and Fire Warrior Shas’ui can allocate rolls to hit of sixes. This is a very good bonus for taking sergeants in your gun-lines now for that extra chance at scoring a sniper shot. Our battlesuit commanders also get a boost with this new rule.

Squadron Damage

Vehicles in a squadron can leave the squadron when damaged in some cases now – giving the Pirahna fleet a better reason to be fielded.

Area Terrain Cover Reduced

Area terrain like craters now only offer a standard of 5+ cover saves, this should be music to the ears of all Tau players who have difficulty whittling away enemy troops that advance through cover.

Defensive Grenades Buff

Defensive grenades now grant Stealth against shooters within 8-inch range which is a nice buff without taking focus away from its main purpose which is to deny extra enemy charging attacks.

Rapid Fire Weapons Buff

Rapid Fire weapons can now fire once at full range, even if the unit moved – this means the Fire Warriors can back-peddle for those crucial extra shots before the enemy is met at a charge. These weapons can now also fire at half their range twice instead of a flat 12-inches; this means the stock standard pulse rifle has a rapid fire range of 15 inches, not bad at all!

Casualty Allocation

Closest models to the shooter are now removed first – this is amazing news for Tau because now shooting attacks can actually increase the distance between the enemy charger and the Tau gunline.

All in all, I think the new edition of rules has given the Tau a better chance of survival by simply favouring ranged weapons ever so slightly – and why not? We are in the 41st Millenium after all – only cavemen swing power swords around ;).

Orc Army Building Started

The greenskin grand army building has begun.
Wth Grumlok and Gazbag my centrepiece, I am excited to see how this army will look when it finishes.
The bases of the models will be covered in dark grey stones and sand, depicting the sorts of battlefields that would see Dwarf opposition.
It will be a very in-your-face list, with very little shooting and lots of big mobs. Other players have said stuff like ‘you need more magic’ or ‘get some diverting light cavalry’, but to me, Orcs don’t need to be sophisticated!

The list is as follows:
Black Orc Warboss (Arabyan Carpet, Armour of Destiny)
Orc Warboss (Wyvern, shield, Battleaxe of the Last Waagh)
Black Orc Big Boss (boar, Mork’s War Banner)
Orc Shaman (level 2, dispel scroll)
Night Goblin Big Boss (great weapon)
Night Goblin Shaman (level 2)
30 Orc Boyz (full command, shields)
30 Orc Boyz (full command, additional hand weapon)
50 Night Goblins (full command, netters, spears)
20 Night Goblins (musician, bows)
20 Night Goblins (musician, bows)
4x Night Goblin Fanatics
10 Forest Goblin Spider Riders (full command)
24 Black Orcs (full command, Banner of Eternal Flame)
15 Boar Boyz (spears, shields, full command)
3 River Trolls

Grumlok and Gazbag

A few years back, my good friend Alvin gave me a collector’s edition of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.
The impressive boxed set contained a stack of awesome artwork and a very special miniature of the Orc warboss Grumlok, carrying the great shaman Gazbag on his shoulder. After painting it, I entered it into Golden Demon 2011- needless to say, I didn’t win :p.

The model is so large that it spills over the base, making it unable to fit in a normal mob of Orcs. I envisage running this model thusly:
Black Orc Warboss
– Armor of Destiny
– Arabyan Carpet

Arabyan Carpet gives the character flying movement at the expense of being able to join other units- perfect for this model! I would imagine that Grumlok would have this amazing ability conferred by the mischievous goblin sorcerer on his shoulder.

Armor of Destiny gives the warlord an impressive defensive measure, for the inevitable moment that he literally flies into the enemy ranks, leaving the rest of his boyz behind.

My next project is to give Grumlok the grand army he deserves; 3000 points worth of greenskins. Looking forward to posting my progress!

Dreadfleet Night

I took the Dreadfleet game for a spin tonight with a bunch of mates. There was one important house rule: anyone caught saying ‘left’ or ‘right’ instead of port or starboard had to drink a shot of rum. We all got a bit tipsy.

After getting everyone to paint their own treasure token, we got down to the business of privateering.

The highlight of my night was the Curse of Zandri, being crippled by a Blessed Shot fired the Light of Ptera upon the Heldenhammer, causing it to be set ablaze, which caused a magazine explosion and eventually sinkage from a Slowly Capsizing status.
